TIG Walking Cup vs TIG Pulse. Which is better? Understand each technique.

1. Introduction
This videos introduces the pros and cons of TIG walking cup and TIG pulse skill.
It show how to set parameters such as pulse frequency, pulse on time and background amp etc.
Users should understand these setup is different with each welding machine and model.
Pls just take my setup as a reference and you should review your manual for your machine.

2. Understanding TIG Pulse
It is like a TIG food pedal control. Press the pedal, and the amperage is higher, back off the pedal, the amperage is lower. So TIG pulse creates a similar effect as the foot pedal.

-You can create flawless, smooth, good penetrating welds, even on a thing gauge material without burn through.

So may welders use tig pulse to weld thin plates, but I will show you how to use TIG pulse on the stainless pipes.

If you set 10 pulses per second with 200A on the peak amp and 20A on the low amp, the current will switch 10 times between 200A and 20A.

3. TIG Pulse Parameters Set
Peak Amperage : The maximum amp in one pulse
Background amperage : the minimum amp in one pulse
Pulse width or Pulse on time : The percentage of time frame the peak amp is active
Pulse frequency : Number of pulses per second

There are a number of configurations you can make with these parameters.
The biggest challenge will be get the right parameters configuration depending on the welded material, thickness, travel speed, bead shape etc.

4. Good things about TIG PULSE
1) Less Heat Input
Compared regular tig welding skills such as freehand or walking cup, TIG pulse gives way lower heat input. That's why it is preferred when you weld thin plates. It gives less heat and less distortion.

2)Good penetration and travel speed.
Once you are used to TIG pulse, you will feel it is way faster than walking cup or freehand welding

3) Weld Looks Wonderful
One of the biggest reasons, I like tig pulse. It is just a beauty.

4) Improved weld quality.

As a stainless steel pipe welder, I like to use TIG pulse if I can rotate the pipe. However, I prefer walking cup technique if I have to weld out of position without a rotator.
