Live Zoom recording of our event on 5/25/21
AccessSFUSD:The Arc in collaboration with Inclusive Media Arts are proud to present CRIP CAMP: UP CLOSE & PERSONAL. This was a student-curated conversation with Academy Award-nominated Crip Camp directors Jim LeBrecht & Nicole Newnham and advocates Bruce Oka & Dennis Billups from the 504 Sit-Ins!
STUDENT QUESTIONS:
DeMian: Nicole and James- Our classes at Access and Inclusive Media Arts involve a lot of collaboration! How did you collaborate and split up the responsibilities of having 2 directors on the film?
Brendan: James, you attended Camp Jened and made a lot of friends who you still are in touch with today. Socialization and friendships are really important to us. Do you have any tips on how you made those friends and how did you manage to keep in touch after all these years without social media?!
Ruby: Our next question is for Dennis. You were the Chief Morale Officer during the sit-ins. That’s such a cool title! I love cheering at the Special Olympics for my classmates. Who gave you the title of Chief Morale Officer and what is one of your favorite chants or songs that you used to keep people’s spirits up?
Joey: Our next question is for Bruce Oka. Bruce, we know that you were one of the people who were allowed in and out privileges at the Federal Building. Why did some people have permission to leave the Federal Building and come back while some had to remain inside for all 28 days?
DeMian: Next question is for our directors. Resilience is a trait we all work to develop. Did you encounter any obstacles when working on this film? If so, what did you do to be resilient and work through them?
Brendan: The next question is for Dennis. In the film, we saw the Black Panthers helping out the protestors in the Federal Building. How did they support the cause during the sit-ins and what was it like doing activism with them?
Ruby: Our next question is for Bruce. The sit-in at the Federal Building lasted 28 days. That’s a really long time. Did you see any friendships or romantic relationships sprouting in the Federal Building?
Joey: Dennis, this next one is for you. It’s been a year since we’ve all been isolated from COVID. We really could have used someone like you to keep our morales boosted! Can you whip us up a quick little chant to help get us through this last stretch of COVID?
Brendan: Our next question is going to start with Nicole, and then Nicole you can ask one other panelist to respond as well. My favorite scene was when Judy Heuman was standing up for what she believed in and took it all the way to the White House. I loved that it helped make a difference and showed that people with disabilities should not be treated differently. Being disabled is not bad. We truly are unique and special in our own ways! Nicole, was your favorite scene in the movie?
(AUDIENCE QUESTIONS HERE)
DeMian: LIGHTNING ROUND!!! Now we are going to ask you a series of questions and would love a quick, one word, or sentence answer from each of you. OK, here it goes! We’ve got a lot of public transportation lovers in the audience and many members of our SFMTA Accessibility Advisory Committee here, including me! What is your favorite transportation system or line and where is it?
Ruby: What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?
Joey: If you could be any superhero who would you be?
DeMian: Thank you so much to all our panel members. Let’s hear it for today’s panel!!! You all have been so inspiring to us.
