I start by sharing why I was away for almost a year and what is next for Vehicular DIY. Then we dive into a full B58 oil pump DIY and upgrade. We diagnose uses oil with no smoke, inspect the relief valve, and replace the pump. I also explain how memberships work and what content is available at each tier.

Climate failure modes
Cold climates can make the plastic pump body or vanes brittle. A crack or broken vane can shed debris and block oil flow, which risks starvation.
Hot climates can make the relief valve stick. A stuck relief can raise system pressure and push oil past seals or into the charge tract. This can show up as oil consumption with no visible smoke.
Parts nuance
Many early Gen 2 B58 large-chassis applications list 11418646454 for the pump. Catalogs often keep that same number on the X5 even as some sedan and coupe models moved to a revised part. Always verify by VIN.
Early 2020 M340i and related B58TU cars show 11418646453, later superseded by 11419895359. The 359 pump is widely listed as the revised unit across many B58C and B58D models. Verify by VIN for your build month.

Why this matters
Cold breakage can block oil passages and starve bearings. Heat-related sticking of the relief valve can spike pressure and increase oil consumption without visible tailpipe smoke. If your B58 is using oil and you do not see smoke, start with a relief valve inspection and consider a full pump replacement or the revised unit where applicable.
