A 2023 study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reveals significant gaps in nursing home survey teams, with fewer than half of surveyors having four or more years of experience and inconsistent RN presence during inspections. Some states conducted surveys with as few as 18% RN participation, and surveyor caseloads exceeded 30 facilities annually in several areas. A recent court ruling also removed CMS’s requirement for RNs on every survey. Experts warn this combination may compromise resident protections and call for further study on the impact of experienced survey teams and clinical oversight on quality outcomes.
