In this video, I am mining for Datolite at the Caledonia Copper Mine, which is located about 20 minutes from Ontonagon, MI. This is a public dig mine that you can mine material from your own private piles for a fee. They supply tools and water and have the ore piles set up before you arrive. You are welcome to bring your own tools. You must call ahead for reservations. At the time of making this video, the datolite ore pile is $200 for 1.5 cu yards of material. You are allowed 2 people and 2-4 hours of time. They also offer Family Ore Piles, Single Person Ore Piles, and the Tailings Piles. The staff is very friendly and quite helpful. Make sure you come prepared! It is hard work, and you will most likely get quite dirty. Children and seniors are not advised. The tools I brought with were 2 five gallon buckets, rock picks, chisels, a pinpoint metal detector, and a stiff bristle toothbrush. Also, I advise bringing water and snacks as you will work up an appetite. The drive to the mine is not terrible, but it is a rough and bumpy road. So, drive with caution. I made it no problem in my Subaru Crosstrek.
Thank you for watching!
