The WWII bombing of Buckingham Palace

Описание: On the thirteenth of September 1940, five bombs were dropped on Buckingham Palace.

Several workers were injured and the Royal Chapel, the inner quadrangle, and the Palace gates were all hit in the German attacks.

In a letter to her mother-in-law Mary of Teck, Queen Elizabeth said that right after the bombing, “I saw a great column of smoke & earth thrown up in the air, and then we all ducked like lightning into the corridor … the urge was to get away from the windows. Everybody remained wonderfully calm, and we went down to the shelter”.

Even though Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret had already been sent to Windsor Castle, and in spite of the recent attacks, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth refused to evacuate.
