Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu Mandir, the UAE’s first traditional hand-carved Hindu temple.
The structure was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, February 14 and, hours later, I am one of the first inside. Sculpting work began here in 2020, on seven shikhars, or spires, that represent the seven Emirates, each telling the story of the life and teachings of deities worshipped by Hindus in India and beyond.
The 10,000-capacity temple officially opens to the public on Sunday, although UAE residents are encouraged to hold off until 1 March to avoid overcrowding.
More than 20,000 tonnes of stone and 5,000 tonnes of Italian marble were used to construct this temple.
