Why We Buy Counterfeits (And What We Do With Them)
We’ve had a few questions lately about why we spend our own money on counterfeit guitars, especially ones listed as “real.” So here’s the honest reason:
It’s education.
These guitars are out there — on Marketplace, Craigslist, pawn shops, guitar stores, and major resale platforms. People get scammed every day. If no one shows what these fakes actually look like up close, how they’re built, and how they differ from real instruments, then players (especially newer ones) are left unprotected.
So when we buy them, we document everything:
• What the seller claimed vs. reality
• Hardware tells
• Headstock / neck / finish inconsistencies
• Electronics + wiring differences
• And most importantly — what it actually costs to make one playable
Because sometimes the “cheap deal” becomes a money pit that ends up costing more than a real Charvel, Jackson, ESP, etc.
And to be clear:
Every counterfeit we feature is permanently marked after the video.
We woodburn brand them with “FAKE” or “COPY” on the heel and inside the cavity.
They will never be resold.
They will never end up tricking another musician.
Our goal is to protect players — not promote counterfeits.
Thanks for supporting the work.
More breakdowns, tear-downs, and real talk coming soon.
