In this video, we continue the UX Problems Guide by Markswebb and examine UX Problems Class 12.3. This subclass focuses on situations where an interface is cluttered with too many elements, making it difficult for users to focus, scan information, and make decisions efficiently.
Class 12.3 belongs to a broader group of UX issues where users experience visual fatigue while using a service. The problem occurs when a screen tries to show too much at once. Users are confronted with dense text, numerous controls, and multiple visual elements competing for attention. Instead of guiding the user’s eye, the interface creates visual noise and forces users to consciously analyze where to look first.
We explain how this issue commonly appears in complex transactional interfaces, especially in travel and booking services. When visual hierarchy is weak and spacing is insufficient, users must spend extra effort distinguishing between options, which slows them down and increases cognitive load.
As a real example, we analyze the flight selection and fare selection screens in Expedia. After entering flight details, users encounter screens filled with similar-looking text blocks and minimal visual differentiation. Key parameters are not emphasized, and users must manually compare options line by line. The fare selection screen adds further complexity, presenting dense text and multiple small indicators that require careful reading at a moment when clarity is critical.
We then compare this experience with a best-practice example from Omio. Omio demonstrates how a cleaner interface can support complex decision-making. Clear spacing, restrained use of color, legible typography, and recognizable airline logos create visual anchors. Highlighted labels such as “Fastest” or “2nd Cheapest” help users quickly identify the most relevant options without scanning every detail.
The video also discusses practical ways to reduce visual clutter, including prioritizing essential information, using grouping and white space to separate sections, and limiting the number of elements shown at the same time. We explain why reducing visual noise is essential for usability, comfort, and long-term engagement.
This video is part of Markswebb’s UX Problems Guide and is based on analysis of real user flows across multiple digital services.
