We start today’s walk from Rydal and begin with our main ascent up to the first of our 8 Wainwrights Nab Scar. This walk has excellent views which open up as we continue our ascent to and Heron Pike we get views over to Grasmere and the surrounding fells. Stone Arthur appears to our left and is another Wainwright which can be visited quite easily. We continue our ascent with views down to Rydal Beck at on our right and then make our final run to the head of the valley and our 4th Wainwright: Fairfield. After admiring the views over St.Sunday Crag and Helvellyn we head over to Hart Crag and then it’s another down and up to Dove Crag. From here it is a steady walk over to High Pike with views over the Far Eastern fells to our left. Then we are down to Low Pike to collect our 8th Wainwright of the day. Ambleside is ahead of us as we complete the descent and we have a grassy run down for the final section of the walk. From here the walk is steady and low level. At the turn we join a section of the coffin route which takes us through the grounds of Rydal Hall to our finish point.

This is one of the most popular horseshoes in the Lake District. It is a full day out in the Eastern Fells and the Fairfield Horseshoe is a legendary 8 Wainwright Walk than can be ascended from Ambleside, Rydal or picking up Stone Arthur as a 9th Wainwright from Grasmere.
