Julian Jackson examines Charles de Gaulle’s theory and practice of leadership, drawing on the general’s interwar writings and the hard tests of 1940, the Algerian War, and the making of the Fifth Republic. De Gaulle’s model is austere: the leader cultivates distance, accepts the “hair‑shirt” of solitude, and resists drowning in detail so that strategy—not minutiae—guides action. Vision must be anchored in history and a broad culture, yet intellect alone cannot act; following Henri Bergson, instinct and impulse must fuse with analysis. Jackson highlights mesure—restraint—as the classical counter to Napoleonic overreach, and notes the influence of Gustave Le Bon’s crowd psychology alongside a didactic obligation to “take the people with you.” Case studies follow: the moral courage of 18 June 1940; the duplicity and pedagogy of “Je vous ai compris” in Algeria; technocratic statecraft in the Fifth Republic coupled with a capacity to listen to experts; and a foreign policy that prized French national interest over Cold War blocs, including early recognition of Communist China and an ultimately failed bid to recast NATO. In the end, Jackson argues, de Gaulle’s greatness lay in myth‑making that restored France’s self‑respect—“saving the honour of France.”
Julian Jackson, FBA, is a leading historian of modern France and Professor (Emeritus) of History at Queen Mary University of London. His award‑winning De Gaulle (Belknap/Harvard, 2018) is a definitive biography of the general.
