Sai Janagosti Oikya Mancha, a conglomeration of six indigenous communities from Assam, including the Chutia, Matak, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Moran and tea tribes carried out a massive protest in front of the state secretariat in Dispur on Thursday. The protest was called over the government’s refusal to grant scheduled tribe or ST status to the six indigenous communities from the state.
The conglomerate includes the All Moran Students Union, Assam Matak Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, All Tai Ahom Students Union, Chutia Yuva Sanmilan, All Assam Tea Tribe Students Union and All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union. Registering their protest, the leaders from these six communities ‘gheraoed’ the Janata Bhavan in Guwahati’s Dispur area. Police personnel were deployed to control the crowd and prevent the locality from any unforeseen situations.
The protestors warned the government of continuing their protest until their demands are met. They even alleged that the discussions held with the government for granting ST status in the past were just for namesake.
Similar protests were also carried out earlier this month where effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also burnt. The protests started after the Union Cabinet, on September 14, cleared the proposal to notify several tribal communities from Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category, except for the 6 communities from Assam.
