Minimalism & Food: What I eat in a day "as a minimalist"
I don't think that minimalism and food just come together. I am a pretty picky person and I like my food to be somewhat "restaurant quality". Otherwise, why would I waste all that time on making it?
On the other hand, I also want our meals to be simple. I'm a minimalist, I like to keep my kid's things minimalist, and I don't like to make a fuzz about something as everyday-ish as food. I want it to be done kind of "on the side".
Mindfulness / simple food / slow & mindful eating
However, I don't rush it or anything. Making the food, yeah, I want that over with as fast as possible. But having a meal together: no, no rush there. I am proud to say that daycare has been "complaining" that my kid always finishes her food last. Good job! That's how it is supposed to be. I cringe when I see my busy colleagues take 5 min to shove down their steak and then back to work. LOL, no. You don't know how to live if you do that, man.
Vegan / vegetarian plans
I've been vegan on/off for a while and I would say that my diet is 70-90% vegan. We don't eat dairy everyday, and eggs almost never. I have no idea why I chose to eat an egg for this video, I feel really dumb because it totally doesn't represent what we eat.
But maybe that is a good lesson: WIEIAD videos do not show much advice on what to eat, they are just a small sample of reality. So I hope we can keep it cool in the comments. I get asked if I am vegan quite a bit, but this is not an ethical debate video, it's just an aesthetic foodie video, I guess. If you are interested in more than that, please comment, and I will make another video answering your food/minimalist diet etc. questions!
Minimalist family
Practicing minimalism together is really important to me. I know, a lot of people say that it's okay to be different and bla bla bla. But you know, it's actually nicer to enjoy this kind of thing together than being alone in it. There, I said it.
The same goes for food. So yeah, we do enjoy simple homemade food, we do practice minimalism as a family, and also simple eating, if you want to call it that. We are all vegetarians, not just one of us. And that is how we like to keep it :-)
Zero waste / plasticfree
This I have been doing for over 10 years now and it works pretty well for us. Most dairy products, veggies and fruits are available without or in highly recyclable packaging (paper, glass, aluminum—I don't count PP, even though it is such a great material, but Germans are simply too dumb to recycle it and a lot of it ends up being burned, so we avoid it even though it is a safe and highly recyclable packaging material).
Typical German food?
I also wanted to share a few typical German things about our food. I hope you enjoyed these. Most typical would be dinner = Abendbrot, which is often just bread. We eat salad for dinner with only a bit of bread, because it actually impacts our sleep. It's so weird to write "we" all the time, but it's true. None of us wants a heavy meal in the evening anymore (okay, my kid does, but she doesn't get to choose lol).
Baking our own bread
We've been making our own sourdough bread for over a year now and I am really happy about that. It is just so conveniant and easy to do. Both me and my husband bake, but mostly him, because he likes it more than I do. At this point, our sourdough is really good and just tastes great, so we have absolutely no reason to buy bread anymore. It is also cheaper than bread from the bakery (even if we buy everything organic and include the electricity bill).
Sugar / no sugar
One thing that did not come out in the video so much is that I actually don't eat sugar. I tried the keto diet for a while (if you don't know why, watch my "chronic pain" video). And it just stuck with me. I am NOT AT ALL an advocate for the keto diet, I actually think it is a pretty imbalanced diet and also, whenever a diet has this "cult status", it's a red flag to me. I do think it is sufficient to cut back on sugars and not all fruit. I eat as much fruit as I like.
