Andy Dunn shared a deeply personal and unfiltered account of living with bipolar disorder, beginning with his first manic episode as a college student at Northwestern University. During that period, Dunn described experiencing extreme sleep deprivation, substance use, and a psychotic break that led him to believe he was destined to save the world. While the experience felt euphoric and intoxicating to him, it created fear and chaos for his family and friends, who eventually intervened and helped him receive emergency treatment. After a week of sleep, medication, and medical care, Dunn began confronting the reality of his diagnosis — a moment that introduced fear, denial, and shame that followed him for years.
Despite early warning signs, Dunn said he spent much of his young adulthood avoiding his diagnosis, influenced by cultural stigmas and a desire to separate his identity from his illness. He built a successful career, eventually founding a company that grew to hundreds of employees, millions in revenue, and more than $100 million in venture capital funding. However, the intense highs and lows of entrepreneurship mirrored the challenges of his condition, allowing symptoms to hide behind the pressures of startup life. Years later, just as his company approached a major milestone, Dunn experienced a second severe manic episode that resulted in hospitalization, legal challenges, and a prolonged period of depression that he described as the most difficult chapter of his life.
Dunn credits his recovery to a combination of consistent medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, and unwavering support from his family and wife. His experience ultimately inspired him to speak publicly, write his memoir Burn Rate, and launch a new startup focused on helping people build community and connection. Dunn emphasized the importance of reducing stigma, expanding access to mental health care, and recognizing the strengths often associated with neurodivergence. He closed by expressing hope that open conversations and greater societal support can help others receive the care and acceptance they need to thrive. #PiZetta Media
