Out of all the characters in The Great Gatsby, I honestly think that Myrtle Wilson is the most tragic one. She's married to a man she disdains, and she can never attain the identity or social status that she so desperately wants. To top it all off, Myrtle also dies a violent death, but it almost seems like dying is a better alternative than living in her case.
What makes her such a sad character, and how should we as readers empathise with Myrtle's plight for a deeper understanding of the novel as a whole? Watch this video to find out, as I analyse all the key moments in which Myrtle appears, specifically Chapters 2 and 7.
