You can create these easy DIY weighted planters and string your outdoor patio lights in any configuration you want! The concrete base gives the container weight for a sturdy stand.
You will need:
Plastic planting container (5 gallon size or greater)
40lb bag of Quick-Crete
8' length of 1-2" diameter wooden dowel or 1" x 1" lumber
2" PVC pipe, cut to ample height
J-hook or nail to attach light string
Directions:
1. Cut length of PVC pipe so it's an inch or two taller than your plant container.
2. Cut wood dowel or 1" x 1" lumber to 8' length, or to whatever height you wish for your lighting needs.
3. Stain and seal length of wood.
4. Install a metal J-hook or simply a penny nail into the top end or top side of wood. This is how you'll secure the light to the stand.
5. Prepare one bag of QuickCrete in a bucket. Mix well with handheld garden shovel or hoe, or use a drill mixing attachment.
6. Stand the cut PVC pipe up in the center base of container.
7. Pour prepared concrete AROUND PVC pipe (you may need someone to hold the pipe in place while you do this, or use construction adhesive at base of pipe to adhere to base of container) This can be the tricky part if doing by yourself, but it can be done. Make sure the pipe stands up straight during the concrete curing. Duct tape can be used.
8. Drill a number of holes (at least 4) into side of planting container for plant drainage, just above the level of the concrete. It's best to wait until the concrete is cured to do this step.
9. Fill top of container with potting soil, then plant as you wish!
NOTE:
The weighted planter stand will be heavy, so be careful with your body as you move it into position.
The weight of your outdoor light string will affect how far away you can position your stands. The lights we used for this project are somewhat heavy, and more plant stands might be necessary. Lightweight Christmas light strings don't need as much support, and hence less weighted plant stands.
In the winter, you can pull the wood poles out of the container to prolong serviceable life. They will be exposed to water while mounted in the container.
