In the 1979 Monte Carlo Rally, Waldegard finished second, but only by a hair's breadth: he clocked a total time of 8:13:44. Bernard Darniche won the rally in his Lancia Stratos, with a total time of 8:13:38. Waldegard missed first place by just six-tenths of a second, placing second.
