Composer: Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Performed by the Castalian Quartet ( • Castalian Quartet, Haydn String Quartet in... )
Haydn's seventy-sixth opus was first published in 1799 by Artaria in Vienna and Clementi in London, although records indicate that the six quartets were completed by 1797. They were dedicated to the Hungarian count Joseph Georg von Erdődy, which lent them their nickname "Erdődy Quartets".
The second of the six quartets is in four movements and features a descending-fifths motif throughout the first movement, lending the quartet its nickname "Fifths" (or "Quinten" in German). The third movement is a canon between the violins and the viola/cello, illustrated by the unusual layout of the score. It was performed by the Castalian Quartet in a 2018 recording at Wigmore Hall.
