GPCOG and SMRCC Grid Resilience Series – Session Three
As electricity demand grows and climate-driven stress on the grid intensifies, long-term planning is essential to maintaining reliable and resilient electric service across Maine. In this session, Central Maine Power (CMP) Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs Craig Nale provided an overview of CMP’s Integrated Grid Plan and explained how the utility is preparing for future demand, system stress, and evolving energy needs.
Key Learning:
How load forecasts and climate impacts shape long-term grid planning
Main sources of stress on the electric system
The range of solutions considered—from traditional poles-and-wires investments to automation, batteries, and other grid-enhancing technologies
How reliability and resiliency are evaluated within the planning process
How rate design, flexible interconnection, and regulatory frameworks intersect with local action
