Thatcham station opened on December 21st 1847 at the time when the Berks & Hants Line was extended to Hungerford

To the north of the station is the nearby Royal Mail Sorting Office which is located to the former site of the Thatcham Ordance Depot

The former Thatcham Ordance Depot was built in 1940 during World War II by the 332nd engineer General Service of the US Army which included the building of a number of sidings for deliveries of equipment during the conflict

After World War II it was converted into a base for the Royal Logistic Corps which was used until it's closure in 1999 which nowadays was replaced by a housing estate.

To the south side nearby which can be acessed from the west Side of the station which is the same end that includes the Level Crossing is a bridge that crosses over the Kennet and Avon Canal which connects up with the River Kennet near Reading and the River Avon near Bath which flows from there all the way to Avonmouth

Today for the station itself it's served by Hourly Reading - Newbury stoppers and London - Newbury services with the latter calling only here and Theale between Reading and Newbury which both are nowadays operated by Class 387 Electrostars.

Up until May 2022 services to and from Bedwyn called here hourly were operated by 5 car Class 800 or 802 IETs however since the timetable change in May 2022 all Bedwyn services were cut back to Newbury with the only exception on weekdays with a few trains at either end of the day going to Reading or London Paddington.

The Class 800 and 802 IETs which operate the main intercity routes to the South West from London Paddington mostly run in electric mode on the line as far as east of Newbury Racecourse where the train switches to Diesel Mode due to the overhead wires ending West of Newbury with the role reverse occuring for London Bound Trains after Newbury Racecourse although the only exception is IETs stopping at Newbury where London Bound Trains can switch power modes on the Platform.
