EP derailment settlement increases to $25,000 per personal injury claim, community reacts

Описание: What was originally $10,00 for personal injury from the $600 million class action settlement in the train derailment in East Palestine is now $25,000 apiece.

But do those most affected think it's enough?

The increase comes after lawyers who negotiated the deal found more information about how many claims there will be.

"We’re now more than two-thirds of the way through the claims process, so we have real data from this settlement and from this community as far as participation and what's coming in through the claims center,” said Adam Gomez, partner, Grant & Eisenhofer, one of the lead law firms for the case.

For the East Palestine community, mixed emotions are on the line about how the situation was handled.

"I think that's great,” East Palestine resident Dan Speidel said. “I don't think they've done enough quite frankly. I've seen too many people in the community that lost their houses because they were contaminated, then they were put in a temporary house, then nothing."

Many residents have submitted claims ahead of the Aug. 22 deadline at the settlement center. Residents within 10 miles are eligible up to $70,000 in property damage and the now $25,000 for injury payment.

"I live just inside the 2-mile limit,” Rick Istnick said. “But there are people who were at Ground Zero who really need this and possibly in the future for their health."
