Deschutes National Forest

Описание: Deschutes National Forest is nestled along the east side of the Cascade Mountains (Bend, Oregon). National forests are a lot like national parks. They’re protected not only for their beauty, but because they’re a critical ecosystem. There are countless recreational opportunities out here. In this episode, we help protect endangered species in Oregon with an incredible view from Paulina Peak Trail. In addition, we mountain bike down a volcano and ATV on old lava fields.

Protecting Endangered Species
Whitebark pine is a big food source for both Grizzly Bears and Black Bears. While the whitebark trees also provide shelter for wildlife, they are quickly disappearing because of disease, forest fire and climate change.

Mountain Biking Old Lava Fields
We’re headed to Mt Bachelor - a dormant stratovolcano that serves as a ski resort in the winter and a mountain biking in the summer. It’s hard to believe that we’re gonna be biking over lava flows that were created 10,000 years ago. Mt. Bachelor to Bend Mountain Bike Ride is a 22.9 mile point-to-point trail located near Bend, Oregon that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate.

We then go ATVing in Fork Rock. We’re in the high desert section of the forest. The trails were built on old logging roads and rail beds, specifically designed for motorized vehicles like ATVs. Deschutes OHV trail system has a lot of diversity. The trails here are rated for beginners through advanced. You might get a chance to check out Fort Rock - a neat geological formation that sits in Deschutes in high desert. It’s remnants of an old ancient volcano. Fort Rock is estimated to be 100,000 years old and is 200 feet high and almost 5,000 feet in diameter.
