In March 1997, Kamehameha Schools will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its Song Contest. For three quarters of a century, Hawaiian students have blended their voices in harmony and good natured competition, vying for coveted trophies that signified the finest in Hawaiian choral singing. This landmark year is a very appropriate time to debut a collection of “traditional Kamehameha” music, some released for the first time since their recording years ago.
“A Musical Tradition: Nā Mele Ho‘oheno” is a project three years in the making. In part, the project sought to meet Kamehameha’s need for easily accessible, broadcast-quality versions of some of Kamehameha’s and Hawai‘i’s most classic songs. But more importantly, the project became a first-time attempt to connect the story of Kamehameha’s written musical history with a recording of the songs and sounds that are the essence of that story. From the formality of music theory and memorizing notes and lyrics in a classroom to impromptu performance and the joy of singing for pleasure, the story of a century of music and singing at Kamehameha is one worth telling. The story speaks of the people and musical events that touched and influenced the lives of thousands of young Hawaiian students. The companion pieces that tell this story include a book and a double CD or double cassette tape. The printed story is told through historical records, photographs and the personal memories of current and former school administrators, music teachers and graduates, many of whom are well-known musicians and performers. The musical records feature traditional Founder’s Day songs, classic Hawaiian hymns and well known favorites performed by the Kamehameha Concert Glee Club and alumni. The Kamehameha Children’s Chorus performs a warm, moving piece which honors the Schools’ founder, Bernice Pauahi Bishop. There are also recordings from previous “Kamehameha Sings” albums and Song Contests of several decades past. “A Musical Tradition: Nā Mele Ho‘oheno” offers the listener the opportunity to experience traditional Kamehameha music intellectually, visually and through sound. It is a memorable journey that you will not regret embarking upon.
