How Do I Find My Federal Tax Identification Number?
Your Federal Tax Identification Number depends on whether you're an individual or a business. For individuals, this is typically your Social Security Number (SSN). You can find your SSN on your Social Security card, previous federal tax returns (Form 1040), W-2 forms, or 1099 forms. If you cannot locate it, you may request a replacement card or statement from the Social Security Administration after verifying your identity. For businesses, your Federal Tax ID is usually an Employer Identification Number (EIN). The most reliable place to find your EIN is on the original IRS confirmation letter (CP 575 notice) you received when it was issued. It's also printed on past business tax returns, such as Form 1120 for corporations or Form 1065 for partnerships. Additionally, business bank account statements or loan documents might display it. If all else fails, an authorized person for the business can call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line to retrieve it after identity verification.
