In late 1800, Fong Hing was Chinese young man from a poor village in Tai Shan, Canton, China who came to America (Hawaii) to earn money to send back home. He first worked as a house boy to learn English then later started businesses of his own. He married a very young Hawaiian woman and together they had 16 children. In 1953, he died a very prominent businessman. Money he had sent home as a young man had built a school there.
Decades later, on Nov. 16, 1992, some of is children from Hawaii, with their spouses, went to visit Fong Hing's home village in Tai Shan. They were honored and greeted by children with flowers from the school he had funded, and a festive Lion Dance.
