Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch is the holy grail of wave pools — one of the most exclusive and mysterious places in surfing. Most surfers will never ride it, and even fewer photographers will ever experience shooting it from inside the water.

This video takes you behind the scenes of my first visit to the Surf Ranch, documenting a private session with Mike Reola and Matt Biolos (Mayhem / Lost Surfboards), alongside Chris Ward, Cole Houshmand, and their families.

The stakes were high. Renting the pool costs around $50,000 per day, with each wave valued at roughly $700. There are no throwaway waves, no resets, and no room for mistakes.

When I arrived, I was told I wasn’t allowed to swim in the pool, and no drones were permitted. As a surf photographer, that was a tough start. Nate Baker was shooting from land, and while we were making it work, the angles felt limited — until one option remained: shooting from the back of a jetski.
During the first session, a casual conversation turned into a career-defining moment. After sharing my experience as one of only four photographers in the world granted full in-water access at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, everything changed.

Suddenly, I was told to run.

With minutes to spare, I sprinted over 500 meters, dropped my camera into the housing, buffed the port with wax, and ran halfway down the pool — racing to get into position before Chris Ward caught his first wave.

This isn’t just a surf video.

It’s a behind-the-scenes look at trust, preparation, pressure, and what happens when opportunity finally meets experience.
