You may have noticed no Russian flag at the Olympics this year. Russia and Belarus were banned from the Olympics in October 2023 related to specific behavior tied to the invasion of Ukraine. Their athletes can still compete, though, under the banner of “Individual Neutral Athletes.”
This led many to question why Israel wasn’t banned after the Palestinian Olympic Committee requested it. Simply put - the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not ban Russia for political reasons. It was because Russia and Belarus were in violation of written rules and guidelines of the Olympic Truce, and the IOC determined that Israel did not violate it. It’s not a political statement - it’s only a question of whether the truce was violated. We explain.
