There were a fresh carcass of Japanese shrew-mole (Urotrichus talpoides, family Talpidae) and a corpse of adult female emma field cricket (Teleogryllus emma, family Gryllidae) with a long ovipositor lying side by side on the gravelled farm road. I found it strange to see a swarm of tiny ants (unidentified) choose to scavenge on the dead cricket, while somehow avoiding the carcass of Japanese shrew-mole.
I wonder if the hairy body of the Japanese shrew-mole had been coated with natural ant-deterrents, although it was odourless to my nose. Captured in the sunny midafternoon (around 15:20 PM) of early-September 2024 in Japan.
