So many of you have started contacting me regarding the risks of sharing your work on instagram, scared that it may be stolen (also known as plagiarism.) So I figured I’d make a video to set the record straight and try to ease all your worries so that you can begin your instapoetry journey with ease of mind. Also, before we get started if you haven’t already I HIGHLY recommend you watch my dos and donts of instapoetry video after this, I’m seeing a lot of you committing some cardinal sins and you really want to avoid the don’ts I talk about in that video. So, lets talk social media plagiarism.

Don’t get me wrong, having your work stolen is a horrible thing to go through, a real kick in the nuts. But, I’ve been doing instapoetry for years now and haven’t experienced full plagiarism, but I have experienced a strain of it. When we spend hours writing our deepest innermost feels and then build up the courage to share it, the last thing we want is to see it on somebody else’s account. GONZO CHANGING MY NAME AND LAUGHING IN CAMERA. But does it happen? Are you more at risk than not? Are you safer just keeping your work to yourself? Let me explain.

I’m just going to be plain and to the point to begin with. Just share your work. Yes, plagiarism has been known to happen on instagram. But if it does, you do not need to worry. All social media platforms now provide a time stamp of when your posts went live. So if someone was to steal your work, they’d have had to have seen your profile first, meaning your post’s timestamp is always going to be older than the plagiarist which means you have undeniable proof that the original text is yours. You can then either report the plagiarist or have more fun in their comments section by showing them up. But what if you don’t know you’ve been plagiarised? you ask. Unfortunately my friends and fellow poets, that IS just a risk that has to be taken. What goes around really does come around and they’ll be found out sooner or later when the plagiarise one too many people. In the meantime what you have to keep reminding yourself when such worries surface is, not what you could lose, but what you WILL gain by sharing your work.

What you must also remember, that there are more respectful people on instagram than disrespecting (at least in my opinion) and many people are proud to help indie artist raise their brand by reposting work with credits. Which reminds me, ALWAYS have your name or signature in the image you post!

Another thing you have to consider, which is a close strain to plagiarism which can also feel like a kick in the nads but something that is totally unavoidable and happens to all creatives no matter who you are, is when one of your poems do well, expect many different poets to then post something almost exactly the same. All artists borrow inspiration from each other, and you will do it one day too. It’s been done to me a number of times, and by much bigger accounts than me no less! You just have to remind yourself that that is just the name of the game, and be proud that your work was not only good enough to gain some attention by readers, but also good enough for other artists to try and replicate your work.

In summary, there are risks in everything you do in life. There are risks just walking to the shop and back. What you need to remind yourself is that there is far more to gain from sharing your work than losing it. At the end of the day, if someone plagiarises you they will get found out one day… and you will ALWAYS have a time stamp of the time you posted to prove the piece is yours. Take pride in what you do, and the gift you have and share it. Please consider subscribing and turning on notifications and as always, if you found this video helpful so some love my liking. My name’s Adam Gary, and I’ll see you next week. See you next week.
