These notes are based on O. Bryan Wilson, An Introduction to the Theory and Design
of Sonar Transducers (Peninsula Publishing,1989).
A transducer is a transmitter or receiver or both, which converts energy of one form into
another form. This course is concerned with electroacoustic transducers, which convert
electrical energy to acoustic energy, or vice versa. The emphasis will be on underwater
(sonar) transducers, although we will also consider transducers that operate in air. As a
first case of a transducer, however, we consider a simple homemade electrical resistive
sensor that is employed to measure the surface waves on a liquid.
