Jan and Pete Bevington who run Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary in the Shetland Islands describe their work rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing seals and otters that have been orphaned, injured or fallen ill in this magical film shot by Liz Musser and JJ Jamieson and edited by Greg McKinney.
HWS began life in May 1987 when Jan found an orphaned common seal pup washed up on the beach outside her home where she ran Shetland's oldest pub. By the end of that summer she was caring for seven seals...and she never looked back. After the 1993 Braer oil spill that brought in 37 seals, 11 otters and hundreds of volunteers and media, she converted the pub into a vegetarian café to raise funds for the sanctuary.
The café closed in 2009 and now the sanctuary is funded by donations from hundreds of people all around the world. In 2021 a major redevelopment was completed with funding from Shetland Islands Council, the local oil and gas industry, the European LEADER Fund and the charity World Animal Protection, guaranteeing the sanctuary's long term future.
