Portmeirion: The Welsh Italianate Village

Описание: Portmeirion Village: In a riot of vibrant colour and mishmash of architectural styles, the Italian Riviera meets rural North Wales on a steep hillside on the Dwyryd Estuary. This quirky, eccentric place is like a cross between a theme park and an explosion in an ice cream factory.

Portmeirion was designed and built by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1926 - 1939 and 1954 – 1976 and is now owned by a charitable trust.

The village has two hotels, and most of the buildings are used as hotel rooms or self-catering cottages, as well as shops, cafes and galleries.

Portmeirion is also home to a 70-acre sub-tropical forest, known as The Gwyllt (Wildwood in Welsh), with 20 miles of paths, hidden lakes, follies and estuary views.

It has served as the location for numerous films and television shows, most famously as "the Village" in the 1960s ITV television series The Prisoner.
