App helps neighborhood crime watch group fight back against crime

Families are fighting back against crime in their neighborhood with the help of social media. Dimi Crowell used the Village Defense App June 27 to learn about what was happening just outside her front door.
"My husband received a phone call from our neighbor and at the same time I received a text message on my cell phone from the Village Defense app explaining that there was a truck break-in just a couple of houses down," says Crowell.
Minutes later Crowell says she found out someone had broken into her husband's truck.
"He had a pistol stolen a flashlight and a backpack full of magic cards," says Crowell.
Crowell hopes the information neighbors have shared on the app helps police find the auto burglars.
"Sometimes you just find out about what happens to you but whenever you have an app like that you find out that you're not the only victim and sometimes you can trade information and find out more information to help the police solve the crime," says Crowell.
Assistant Chief Gary Porter says Crowell wasn't the only person robbed. Porter says police believe they know who may have done the break-ins but have to gather mote evidence.
"Well I think it's very helpful if a group of people is talking about stuff that's going on in their neighborhood that's great I just encourage them to talk to us about it too," says Porter.
Crowell says the app is helping a community come together.
"The police are doing a great job you know we have had more patrol here at night but nothing's better than having your neighbors look out for you and you looking out for them," says Crowell.
