Alright, let's dive into the backstory of "Weathervane"
"When I heard the guitar for this song it filled me with nostalgia of living in the Prairies. Those golden fields swaying in the warm breeze of a chinook. An endless sky with sunsets that warm the soul. I grew up immersing myself in the poetry of the late Gordon Downie. Tragically Hip shaped my youth and this song carries forward the vibe of "Ahead by a Century". That process of maturing through our innocence and the feeling that there's no place like home."
We are Mount Rushka from Fernie B.C Canada and this is our original song that was featured as a top pick by Classic Rock Magazine. It's featured on our E.P titled "What's This Time For?"
🎵 Lyrics by Adam Laurin
Clothing hanging on a wire
Pins and needles sewing patches of time
Growing blind to inspire
Thoughts of my youth that I struggle to find
Won’t you take me back now
Cuz I can’t fight this feeling no more
Weathervane take me back to the place I call home
I can’t fake it, need a place to soak and settle my bones
Waves of the wheat are swaying softly
Sunshine’s driving through the open sky
Won’t lose my mind fully completely
Moonshine feelings that I left behind
Won’t you take me back now
Cuz I can’t fight this feeling no more
Weathervane takes me back to the place I call home
I can’t fake it, need a place to soak and settle my bones
Won’t you help me mother darling over to the river bed
Lay me down softly, feed me some of nature’s bread
That’s my homestead
The riff you hear in the song actually comes from the major pentatonic scale, which gives it that classic rock vibe. But here's the cool part: it's also inspired by a melodic phrase that's kinda like a nod to an old tune called 'Shortnin' Bread'. Now, here's a bit of trivia for you: 'Shortnin' Bread' has some interesting history. While some folks think it might have roots in African-American music, there's also a possibility it was actually a parody created by a guy named Riley during the minstrel or coon song era. So, when you're jamming out to 'Weathervane', you're not just getting a killer riff – you're tapping into a bit of musical history too!
Mount Rushka's sound is a fusion of diverse influences, blending elements of 'new retro rock' reminiscent of Alabama Shakes with lyrical storytelling inspired by The Tragically Hip. The infectious riffs in 'Weathervane' take cues from guitar virtuosos like Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme, infusing the track with dynamic energy and flair. Drawing from the masterful chord progressions of George Harrison and The Beatles, and chordal voicing found in songs by Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains (think "Rooster" or "No Excuses"), the song's structure carries a timeless quality that resonates with listeners across generations. But the influence doesn't stop there – Mount Rushka also draws inspiration from unexpected places, including the innovative musical stylings of YouTuber Chris Buck with his popular series for guitarists "Friday Fretworks". With each note and lyric, 'Weathervane' pays homage to the giants of rock while forging its own path, creating a sound that's both nostalgic and fresh, rooted in tradition yet sounding like a timeless Rock 'n Roll track that can be enjoyed for years to come.
Want to get to know Mount Rushka a bit? Nestled in the rugged beauty of Fernie, B.C, a town steeped in rock history (fun fact: it was once home to a member of Rush), Mount Rushka stands as a solid testament to the enduring spirit of rock 'n roll. With three members residing on Mount Trinity Ave, just across the street from their neighbour Mrs. Rushka, the band's roots run deep in their community. Having released both a 5-song EP and an 11-song LP in 2024, Mount Rushka has been tirelessly carving out their own 'Mount Rushmore of Rock'. Their music transports listeners to an era when rock ruled the airwaves, drawing from the timeless influences of blues and country that shaped classic rock in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. But there's an unmistakable edge to Mount Rushka's sound, reflecting the intensity and nonconformity of the grunge era that defined the 90s. Working alongside Canadian production royalty Brian Moncarz (Our Lady Peace, Bleeker, The Trews, The Tea Party, Texas King) the band has been spreading their sound locally through sold-out shows and tours across B.C. and Alberta, building a legion of die-hard followers and passionate rock music fans. With their motto #DownRightRock, Mount Rushka invites you to join them on their journey as they carve their place in the annals of rock history."
