August 2025 is ALTEC LANSING DUPLEX Month!

The Chicago Horn Loudspeaker Guys are excited to officially declare August 2025 as ALTEC LANSING DUPLEX Month! To kick things off, we’re diving into a condensed history of the legendary ALTEC LANSING DUPLEX family of loudspeakers.

Our journey begins in 1941 with the original Altec Lansing Field Coil 601. A legendary driver developed by the collaborative efforts of George Carrington, John Hilliard and James Bullough Lansing. The 601 field coil is the ancestor of the mighty 604 Duplex series: the 604, 604B, 604C, 604D, 604E Super Duplex, 604-8G, 604-16G, 604-8H, and the 604-8K coaxial drivers. These speakers were the studio standard for many decades. Numerous recordings were created using them as monitors. This ground breaking driver was still available from Great Plains Audio as recently as 2018, when it became Great Plains Acoustics. Giving it a 77 year run. Possibly the longest running driver in the history of audio.

We also explored notable derivatives inspired by the 604 lineage, including the 12-inch ALNICO 601, the 602, 603, and 605 models. Additionally, we looked at influential designs such as the Master Labs Big Red, and UREI's 811, 813, and 815 studio monitors — based on the 604-16G and 604-8G respectively.

To bring things up to date, we wrapped up this episode with a look at the current lineup from Great Plains Audio, continuing the legacy of these iconic drivers.
