Kyoto Prefecture is located in the Kansai region of central Honshu. It covers about 4,613 km², making it the 31st largest prefecture in Japan by area.
The capital, Kyoto City, was Japan’s imperial capital for more than a thousand years from 794 to 1868. Other notable cities include Uji, famous for its green tea and Byōdō-in Temple, and Maizuru, an important port on the Sea of Japan.
The flag of Kyoto Prefecture was adopted on November 2, 1976. It features a purple field with a yellow and white emblem of the kanji “京” (Kyō) stylized in a circular six-pointed leaf, symbolizing the character of the ancient city.
