DISTRICT OF MUSKOKA SENIOR MANAGEMENT “STEP UP” TO TAKE THE ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
(Tuesday October 7, 2014 - Bracebridge, ON) - The Senior Management Team at The District Municipality of Muskoka got soaked on October 7, 2014 as they stepped up to a challenge issued by senior staff at the Township of Muskoka Lakes to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
In the spirit of the challenge, Michael Duben, CAO for the District of Muskoka, asked his senior management team whether they were prepared "to let cooler heads prevail" or whether staff were going to "step up" and respond promptly to the Township's invitation.
The friendly competition among local municipalities has a common goal to raise awareness about ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. According to the ALS Society of Canada, ALS is a progressive neuromuscular disease which causes nerve cells to die and leaves voluntary muscles paralyzed. Every day, two or three Canadians die from ALS. To date, the Ice Bucket Challenge has raised over $10 million dollars in Canada alone and has succeeded in bringing ALS to the attention of the Canadian public.
"Raising awareness and money with a view to finding new treatments and hopefully one day a cure is what the Ice Bucket Challenge is all about," stated Duben, who encouraged other members of District of Muskoka staff to donate to the worthy cause. Duben thanked the Township for the nomination and senior management for their participation.
