To help reduce hamstring pain, the two primary areas to foam roll are the insertion point of the hamstrings on the sit bone and the sacrotuberous ligament. The sit bone is an area with several muscular, ligamentous, and fascial connections. When these areas get dense and tighten up, it can be a struggle to move, sprint, run, jump, and lift the way you want. Foam rolling these areas helps to ease any tension and restore the muscle’s elastic properties and range of motion.
When foam rolling the hamstring muscles, here are two tips to keep in mind. Instead of working through the belly of the muscle, try using a lacrosse ball to foam roll the insertion point of the hamstring on the sit bone and the sacrotuberous ligament. While foam rolling these two areas, it is vital to focus on keeping an upright torso.
