How weddings shaped Las Vegas’ rise as the world’s wedding capital

Clark County Clerk Lynn Marie Goya, whose signature has been on every Clark County wedding certificate for the last 11 years, said Las Vegas has long been a destination for couples looking to get married.

“Las Vegas has always been a wedding destination since it was founded, since actually before it was founded,” Goya said. “We had our first celebrity wedding in 1929 with John Gilbert who married Inna Claire.”

Goya said Nevada’s approach to marriage laws helped set Las Vegas apart, particularly during prohibition.
