Q. What is a mezuzah?
A. A mezuzah is a small scroll with the Shema written on it with a decorative case that you put on your doorpost. The Shema is an affirmation of Judaism, which comes directly from the Torah [Deuteronomy 6:5-9, Deuteronomy 11:13-21, and Numbers 15:37-41]. Part of the Shema [Deuteronomy 6:9] tells us to write these words on our doorposts, and this practice evolved into writing the words on a scroll instead of the doorpost itself.
Q. How do you put up a mezuzah?
A. Once you put the rolled up scroll (also called a klaf) into the mezuzah case, you attach the case to the right side of your doorpost, at an angle pointing into the room. (Why at an angle? Because there was a great debate about whether we should hang it vertically or horizontally, and the solution was to compromise by making it sort of vertical and sort of horizontal at the same time.)
