I know some of my lenses might have radioactive glass in them so I’m testing them with my geiger counter. I’m using a Radiacode 103G. Back in the day lens manufacturers used Thorium in the glass to give the glass better optical performance. Thorium itself only emits alpha particles, but during its decay it forms daughter products that emit alpha, beta, and gamma radiation.
The levels of radioactivity are very low and are not dangerous. At 4 inches, 10cm, from the lens the radiation is not detectable. I would not sleep with it under my pillow, and I wouldn't eat it. If you avoid those things, you will be fine.
