Arthrokinematics (joint movement) of the lumbar facet joint.
During right rotation, the right lumbar facet opens and the left lumbar facet closes.
During left rotation, the right lumbar facet closes and the left lumbar facet opens.
During flexion (forward bend), both facet joints open.
During extension (back bend), both facet joints close.
These facet joints can sometimes get stuck open or stuck closed and cause pain. If the pain is on the right side, the right facet joint is the affected one.
