Sunken History. It was a crazy gambit. Launch an air attack on the Japanese supply fleet moored in Coron Bay, Philippines requiring a nearly 700 mile round trip.
It would push American Helldiver bombers and Hellcat fighters to their flying limits.
Only 15 minutes on target or they'd run out of fuel on the return trip to their carrier. The result was 12 ships sent to the bottom in a carnage of fire, twisted steel and lives lost.
A terrible defeat for Imperial Japan possibly and one step closer to the end of World War II in the Pacific.
The destroyed relics of that September 24, 1944 event can still be seen today -- if you're bold enough to penetrate the darkness and swim through blast holes.
I had that opportunity recently, diving the wrecks of
the Akitasushima, Okikawa Maru and Olympia Maru. Each a bracing and eerie reminder of war's terrible destructive power.
Take a look for yourself and see if you agree.

Leading the dive was Louie, owner of AQUAHABITAT DIVESAFARI and a former Philippines Navy officer and retired commercial diver.
