*How to cope with rough seas when sailing: practical boating tips*
Sailing in rough seas can be challenging even for the most experienced skippers. In this video from *Nautica in pills*, we explain how to deal with rough seas safely: from the correct position on board to the best sailing techniques. Follow us to find out all the details!

*Seaside navigation: the position on board*
In rough sea conditions, personal safety is a priority. It is essential to distribute people on board correctly, preferably in the cockpit, avoiding exposed areas.
It is better to lean back and use your legs to cushion the boat's movements, avoiding spinal trauma. A stable position with a strong foothold helps maintain balance even in big waves.
*Sailing techniques in heavy seas*
When sailing in heavy seas, the general rule is to face waves at an angle of about 45 degrees, never perpendicular. Navigating directly against the wave or sideways increases the risk of violent impacts or swells.
If you find yourself in front of a particularly high wave, **don't decelerate**: on the contrary, it is advisable to increase your speed to prevent the bow from plunging into the wave. Extra engine thrust allows the boat to tackle the wave safely, taking advantage of the strength of the bow hull.
*What to do if the engine breaks down in rough seas*
In the event of engine failure in rough seas:
*Call for help immediately* via VHF or mobile phone, reporting location and type of problem.
**Use a floating anchor**: it allows you to keep the bow against the wind and waves, stabilising the boat and preventing it from going sideways with respect to the sea, a very dangerous situation.
The floating anchor is an essential accessory when sailing in rough seas: it helps reduce risks and keep the boat under control even when the engine is switched off.

*Conclusions*
Navigating in rough seas requires caution, preparation and a good knowledge of driving techniques. I hope these tips will help you experience the sea safely!
