Réveillez-vous Picards is currently the Picardy regional anthem. It would come from the air sung by the bands of Picardy (at the origin among others of the regiment of Picardy) under the Burgundian states before 1479 and their attachment to the crown of France. The text seems to evoke the period following the death of the Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold in 1477. Marie de Bourgogne, his daughter, inherited it and married Maximilian of Austria. King Louis XI of France seized Burgundy proper and Picardy, which had been part of the kingdom of France, but could not permanently seize the county of Burgundy (Franche-Comté) and other Burgundian possessions which belonged to the Holy Roman Empire. It is understandable that the Burgundian and Picardy soldiers, who had served Charles the Bold for years against those of the King of France, then begged their new Austrian master to lead them into battle to regain the duchy.
