There are five things that primarily effect our distance / distance control. 1: Contact. 2: Shot Shape (Trajectory + Curvature). 3: The Length of our Swing. 4: The Speed of our Swing. 5: Dynamic Loft (The loft of the club when we hit the ball). The better our contact, the further & more consistent distance our ball will travel. We must always assume we are going to make good contact with the ball. Why? Because we are not trying to miss-hit the ball, and even if we do, we don’t know how bad our miss-hit will be, which means some misses will go shorter / longer than others. Additionally, if we do hit the ball solid, we want to be rewarded with a good shot, rather than anticipating a bad shot, and then get punished by hitting the ball too far, if we happen to hit a solid shot. Next, with shot shape, draws tend to travel further, and fades travel shorter. Having said that, most of us try to the same shot every time, so we don’t need to adjust our distance if our shot shape isn’t actively changing. The loft we have is a combination of natural loft (the club we choose to hit) and how our swing makes us add or subtract loft at impact, by leaning the club towards or away from the target at impact. Most of our swings will not change very much in terms of shaft lean during a round of golf, so we can call that a constant as well. So, in other words, as long as we know how far we hit each club in our bag on a “normal” golf shot, we have a starting point for distance control. That means we have 3-elements of distance control that we don’t have to adjust during a round of golf (contact, shot shape, and dynamic loft). That means the 2-remaining skills we need to control, are the length of our swing & the speed of our swing, if we are going to control our distance. The longer our swing, the more potential distance we can hit the ball. The shorter our swing, the less distance we can create. The faster we swing, the further the ball can travel. The slower we swing, the shorter the ball will travel. Once we learn how far we hit each club on a “stock shot,” our job is to practice swinging shorter & slower than normal. That helps us train our swing for control, and it helps us learn to hit less than full distance shots, which is a necessary skill if we are going to be a good golfer
