Did you know that in Padma purana, it is mentioned that IF Japa practice is done without counting, it’s as good as not doing the practice at all!
That’s may be because of the nature of our mind - it’s like a monkey, always keeps jumping around. It becomes even more restless when you try to turn it inwards; I’m sure you’ve experienced that😄
Japa is one such powerful internalisation practice. And for it to yield its power to the practitioner, the practitioner’s presence of mind plays the major role. The more focused the mind becomes, the subtler the awareness can become and the deeper will be the practice.
And our mind always works wonders, especially in the beginning to intermediate stage when it’s given the support of something concrete for it to feel & focus - like the touch sensation through counting using Japa maala.
Now there are many ways to count - using a Japa maala, using the fingers of your palm, writing down the Japa in a dedicated book, & so on.
Using fingers to count Japa is a powerful way as you are using the touch sensation - mind is strongly used to or rather addicted to that! - and take your Japa meditation to the next level (that’s turning it’s addiction for object of pleasure as its most powerful tool!). And with regular practice, we’ll be training our mind to develop a stronger concentration independently. That’s why Japa is one of the most powerful PRE-MEDITATION (I mean the real DHYANA! Not the one that we are doing nowadays in the name of meditation🤭).
There are many methods of counting using fingers - counting the crease or the phalanges (space between 2 creases) etc. In this, I’ve shown the traditional way of doing it - something that’s taught to me by my Guru.
We don’t use the last 2 creases (or even the phalanges) of the middle finger as it’s know as Meru, which in this case is used ONLY to indicate the beginning & end of a cycle - but not used FOR counting.
If you wish for us to make more of such videos on Japa-related topics, let us know in the comments what you want to know & we’ll consider the top5 chosen ones for our upcoming videos 🤗
