Equal legal recognition for all human rights has been resisted in Ireland. The importance of these rights has been made all the more apparent by the ongoing financial crisis where the vulnerable and marginalised often bear the brunt of austerity measures. Government's human rights obligations must be brought to bear in framing the decisions during this crisis, and protecting those most vulnerable.

This conference looked at the relevance of ESC rights to the crisis, how the protection of those rights can be brought to bear through legal change, and the other dynamics at play, including political will and public attitudes.
