Why We Forget Our Dreams?

Most people forget 90–99% of their dreams within minutes of waking up. But why does this happen?
The answer lies in how the brain works during sleep. While dreaming, especially during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, your brain is highly active — but the hippocampus, a key region responsible for forming long-term memories, is less active than during waking life.
This means dreams may be experienced vividly, but they aren’t efficiently transferred to long-term memory. In other words, your brain forgets them before they can be saved.
Some studies also suggest that low levels of norepinephrine (a neurotransmitter involved in memory consolidation) during REM sleep further reduce the brain's ability to retain dreams.
So, it’s not that your dreams don’t exist — it’s that your brain doesn’t bother to keep them.
