Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, and inventor, best known for inventing dynamite and establishing the Nobel Prizes. He held 355 patents and, in his will, left most of his fortune to fund prizes for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Beyond his scientific and business career, Nobel was also a writer of poetry and drama.

His will established the Nobel Prizes to be awarded annually to those who have conferred the "greatest benefit to humankind".
